About the Ruggeri brothers |
|
The Prosecco is a grape. Prosecco is also a delicious sparkling
wine made of the same grape and coming from a restricted area in
the Italian province of Treviso, located between the Italian low
Alps and the Venice region.
The production of Prosecco sparkling wine started about a hundred
years ago, when advancing techniques made it feasible to extract
the subtle aromas from this delicate grape. Since then succes has
spread widely. Especially the Germans appreciate the Prosecco and
so to say made it their national aperitif wine.
Prosecco is generally associated with fruit and fresh acids: apricots,
tangerine, white berries. To soften the acides, the wine is sugared.
The different categories for Prosecco sparkling wine are: Dry and
Extra Dry (rather sweet), Brut and Extra Brut (rather dry). General
rule is that the wine must be pleasant to drink.
Prosecco sparkling wine is not produced according to the "méthode
champenoise" (refermentation in the bottle), but according
to the "Charmat" method, meaning that the second fermentation
takes place in big inox pressured tanks.
Possessing 40 acres of vineyards, the Ruggeri brother are rather
small producers according to local standards. They are known to
be an exception in the region, as they only work with grapes that
they have grown themselves, thus having more control over quality. |

Prosecco Frizzante "Mas" |
|
The
"Frizzante" is to be distinguished from a "regular"
sparkling wine and is categorized as a "pearl wine". This
can be explained by the pressure in the bottle and by the way that
the bottle is closed. Bubbles are a bit less fierce than those of
the sparkling version and disappear more quickly once the bottle
has been opened. Concerning the taste there is little difference
to be perceived. And price is more interesting, as there are no
champaign taxes to be paid...
Pale yellow and enthousiastically bubbling. A very distinctive and
delicate nose, with apricots, tangerine peel, a slight vegetal hint
of artichoke. The flavour is dominated by citrus. Is a bit less
dry than the "Brut" (see hereunder), but this remains
a very fresh and light sparkling wine which is versatile at the
lunch table. Suitable to drink with salads or fruit desserts. And
a lot of fun to drink as well. Will enlighten your summer in a very
agreeable manner... |

Prosecco di Valdobbiadene
Brut "Fagher" |
|
Dry
sparkling wine made according to the "Charmat" method.
Pale yellow with enthousiastic bubbles. A very floral aroma, with
apricots, orange peel, nuts, almonds. Delicious acids, with hints
of lemon, lychees, white berries. Definitely dry. The bubbles are
not at all agressive but very delicate. A very light wine (11,5°
of alcohol). Suitable as aperitif but goes well with a light meal
too. If this is the "poor man's champaign", we will not
bother about private bankers for the time being... |

Prosecco di Valdobbiadene
Dry "Cruner" |
|
In
2007 this sparkling wine was declared a top Prosecco by the famous
wine magazine Decanter (five stars out of five). Why is this another
type of sparkling wine than the Brut Fagher? The Cruner is made
of grapes coming exclusively from the Valdobbiadene region, which
are known for their refined delicacy. Not as structured as the Fagher,
this sparkling wine nevertheless has a wonderful nose and is impressively
elegant, making it an ideal apéritif and a great companion
to desserts. |
