About the Cesconi brothers |
|
Cesconi is a name that rings like a bell and not only in the Italian
province of Trentino. The Cesconi brothers (the four of them) are
widely known for their fine white wines and their powerful, sophisticated
reds.
Their home base is the village of Pressano in the North of the Trentino
province (at a few miles' distance from Graziano Fontana's Faedo!).
This area is still a part of the (low) Alps, which explains why
the brothers have given their wines the "Vigneti delle Dolomiti"
label. A unique terroir and a quality driven approach lead continuely
to surprising and even overwhelming results.
The grapes for the red wines are grown in the village of Dro, ten
kilometers to the North of the Garda lake, in the most Southern
part of the Trentino province. Here climate and soil are more suitable
for the Merlot and the Cabernet Franc.
To our surprise we found ourselves sharing a passion for German
wines with Roberto Cesconi, the spokesman of the family. As an apprentice
Roberto spent lots of time at the bords of the Moselle, in the Palatine
and in Baden. German Rieslings or Spätburgunders have not got
any secrets for him as they were a part of his professional education.
Being Italian wine makers the Cesconis are exceptionally broad-minded
and curious.
In addition to the red wines of the house, we are now also distributing
the white Nosiola and the Prabi Bianco, a blend of Incrocio Manzoni,
Riesling and Pinot Bianco. |

Rosso Vigneti delle
Dolomiti "Moratèl" |
|
A
cuvée of: Merlot (40%), Cabernet Franc (also 40%), completed
with (hold on) Lagrein, Teroldego and Syrah.
Vintage 2004 has a purple colour. A very earthy nose with leather
and plums. Nice acids in the full flavour, and beautifully structured.
A classy wine with an interesting price tag. |

Rosso Vigneti delle
Dolomiti Lagrein + Teroldego |
|
Two
related grapes in this cuvée. The Lagrein is a typical Southtyrolean
grape with some use in Trentino. The Teroldego is exclusively grown
in the North of Trentino (Mezzocorona en Mezzolombardo are the best
known centers). A very deep purple. The nose is overwhelming: truffles,
blackberries and mocca circling up from the glass in delicious little
clouds. Lots of fruit and chocolate in the flavour. Delicious acids
and a robust structure. Concentration is such that we would like
to use the term "jammy". |
|
Rosso Vigneti delle
Dolomiti "Pivier" |
|
100%
Merlot. The vineyard "Pivier" lies a couple of miles to
the North of the Garda lake and has a chalky sand soil littered
with rocks. In this area, where fruit and olive trees, the Merlot
was planted in 1994 by means of experiment. The "Pivier"
is now widely recognized as one of the best Italian Merlots. A very
thick texture. A deep dark red. A nose of mocca and leather. A massively
concentrated and sophisticated, layered flavour. A super Merlot. |
